Foundation's 30th Annual Golf Classic October 2, 2015

The Beverly Hospital Foundation will celebrate 30 years of hosting its annual golf classic that raises funds for the non-profit community hospital. This year’s tournament will take place on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 8 a.m. at the Montebello Golf Course. Funds from this year’s event will go to improving the health and wellbeing of the communities served by the hospital.

“The hospital Foundation is thrilled to host yet another eventful golf classic and we cannot thank our sponsors enough for their generous contributions to the hospital,” said Yulanda N. Davis-Quarrie, Director of Advancement of the Beverly Hospital Foundation. “This event will allow Beverly Hospital to continue its long-standing tradition of providing quality health services to our communities.”

Organized by Beverly Hospital’s Board of Trustees, the golf tournament aims to raise funds to ensure that Beverly Hospital provides the best health care available to patients.

The Beverly Hospital Foundation is a not-for-profit fundraising organization of the hospital and is headed by the Board of Trustees. Through its events like the annual golf classic, Beverly Hospital is able to meet the needs of the communities it serves through acquisition of equipment and technology and support of expansion projects.

The tournament will feature driving range access and a putting contest, a shotgun start, a silent auction, live auction and a progressive raffle. A reception and awards banquet will also follow in the afternoon.

Beverly Hospital, a 224-bed acute care hospital, has been serving the community for more than 66 years, providing award-winning services in cardiac care, emergency care, medical & surgical services, wound care, diabetic care, stroke care, maternity care and more.

Beverly Hospital Receives Grant from Susan G. Komen
Beverly Hospital Receives Grant from Susan G. Komen

The Los Angeles County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen has awarded a grant to Beverly Hospital in Montebello to support a no-cost breast cancer diagnosis program at the hospital’s Women’s Pavilion and Breast Center.

The $30,000 grant will serve to cover the costs for a full range of diagnostic services for the early detection of breast cancer for more than 100 symptomatic uninsured or underinsured women and men, 40 years of age or under.  Women and men who meet the criteria for the breast cancer screenings can receive digital mammography,  ultrasound and core needle biopsy as well as radiology and pathology consultations from hospital physicians without cost.

“The Komen grant is generous gift to the women and men in our communities,” said Alice Cheng, President and Chief Executive Officer of Beverly Hospital, a non-profit independent hospital that has served residents of Montebello and surrounding communities for more than 60 years.  “With nearly one in five women in Los Angeles County having incomes below the federal poverty line and another almost quarter of them uninsured, this is an important community benefit program to improve access to critical breast cancer screening,” she added.

Experts say women and men under age 40 who have abnormal mammograms need access to further clinical follow up care.  Breast cancer is the second leading cause of pre-mature death for women in Los Angeles County.

“This grant will allow us to care for younger women and men who would otherwise go without getting screened for breast cancer,” stressed Dr. David Brousseau, a diagnostic radiologist on staff at Beverly Hospital and an advocate for greater screening programs for the at-risk population.   Moreover, it will allow us to perform all of the necessary procedures at no cost to patients who meet the eligibility criteria as well as engage in vigorous after care with our patient navigators who will ensure proper follow up.”

Dr. Brousseau said that early detection of breast cancer is critical for younger population.  “Early detection improves a person’s treatment options and improves their chance of long-term survival if she/he is diagnosed with breast cancer.  This no-cost program may mean the difference between life and death for many at-risk.”

Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest breast cancer organization and the Los Angeles County Affiliate is one of more than 120 on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities.  Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, educational and financial barriers to accessing breast health care.

Alice Cheng named CEO at Beverly Hospital
Alice Cheng named CEO at Beverly Hospital

The Board of Directors of Beverly Hospital, a 224-bed non-profit independent community hospital in Montebello, California, has appointed Alice Cheng as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Cheng had been serving as the interim CEO for the last year.

Cheng was unanimously appointed CEO by the Board of Directors, which cited her extensive and diverse leadership roles at the hospital as instrumental in the growth and success of Beverly Hospital in the last years.

“Alice is a proven leader and has served the hospital in many capacities effectively for many years,” said Dr. Carlos Manuel Haro, chairman of the Board of Directors of Beverly Hospital. “We have full confidence in her abilities to lead Beverly Hospital into the future as we undertake a major upgrade to our facilities and expand our scope of services, specifically a much-needed expansion of our emergency department.  She has a great feel for the community and is driven to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.”

During the time serving as interim CEO and in other leadership positions, Cheng has successfully improved the financial position of the hospital, transforming the hospital’s position from multi-million dollar losses to a positive excess net income in 2014, funds which were reinvested back into the hospital to benefit the community.   In addition, she led a comprehensive analysis of the hospital’s strategic decision to remain independent and not affiliate or merge with other health care providers.

“After much due-diligence, we came to the conclusion that remaining true to our founding mission as an independent community-benefit hospital was the best course of action for our hospital’s future and for the communities we serve,” said Dr. Haro.

Prior to her arrival at Beverly Hospital, Cheng served as the associate administrator of business development for Tenet Health Care System in El Monte, California, where she also led marketing and communications initiatives for the organization.

“I’m honored to have been chosen by the Board to lead Beverly Hospital in this challenging healthcare environment,” said Cheng. “For more than 65 years, Beverly Hospital has committed itself to serving the community with high quality medical care, and I believe its mission today is more important than ever.  We have been a valuable safety net stakeholder in the community and generations of our residents have trusted us with their care and wellness.  I take that responsibility very seriously and look forward to ensuring our continued success.”

Cheng earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from the National Chengchi University, Taiwan, and earned her Master of Arts in Public Relations from the University of Southern California (USC). Cheng also completed a fellowship with the California Health Leadership College.

The Face of Breast Cancer
The Face of Breast Cancer

October 2014

There’s a lump in my breast – now what? There are different types of breast cancer that affect women. The Community Outreach Lecture series for the month of October brought out many new faces as “The Face of Breast Cancer” was indeed a hot topic and of utmost interest to many.

Beverly Hospital speaker and oncologist Ira Felman, MD, lectured on how breast cancer can affect both women and men. He encouraged monthly self-exams and annual breast checkups with their PCPs. Also discussed were the types of breast cancer, treatments available, and much more. The audience of 36 had many questions for the speaker to answer. We commend Dr. Felman for his involvement as a Beverly Hospital Community Outreach Lecturer and breast cancer advocate.

The Beverly Hospital Foundation held their 29th Annual Golf Tournament on Thursday, September 25th at the Montebello Golf Course. Proceeds from the tournament benefitted the areas of Beverly Hospital where the need is greatest. Hats off to our three major supporters of the tournament: Medline, Sodexo, and PNG Construction, who participated in the newly incorporated Pacesetter sponsorship level. An afternoon awards banquet was held in the Cannoneer Room at the Quiet Cannon following the tournament.

This year 98 golfers enjoyed the comfort of the 85-degree weather and freshly groomed course. Many of the golfers won great prizes for on-course contests, raffles, and the highest bids at the silent auction. Larry Pugh, Vice President of Finance/CFO, won the progressive raffle again this year, taking home a 39” Samsung LED television.

A live auction was also held, featuring two wine cellars and a catered gourmet dinner for eight. The wine cellars consisted of bottles donated by members of the Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees, and the Golf Committee. Sodexo sponsored the catered dinner. The Foundation Golf Classic was successful in securing close to $80,000 in net proceeds.
